What Are ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini? What's the Difference, and When Should You Use Each One?

ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini... Almost everyone has heard of them, but few people know what sets them apart. This post explains what each one does best and when it's worth choosing one over the others.

If you've started exploring AI, you've probably heard all three names: ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini. Many people assume they all do the same thing with different branding. In reality, there are important differences, and understanding them will help you get better results.

None of them is perfect for everything. But each has a few areas where it clearly outperforms the others.

What Is ChatGPT?

ChatGPT is OpenAI's AI assistant and currently the world's most widely used AI application.

What is it best at?

It delivers solid results across almost any everyday task: writing emails, summarizing documents, brainstorming ideas, translating text, and answering questions. If you're just getting started with AI and aren't sure which tool to choose, ChatGPT is the best place to begin. Most tutorials, articles, and online communities focus on ChatGPT, so finding help is easy.

It's also the only one of the three that offers built-in image generation directly within the chat interface, along with natural voice conversations.

Where does it fall short?

Its context window is around 128,000 tokens, which is smaller than some of its competitors when working with very large documents. The free version also includes ads and comes with message limits.

What Is Claude?

Claude is Anthropic's AI assistant. While it's less well known than ChatGPT, it's highly regarded by professionals who regularly work with long documents and writing-intensive tasks.

What is it best at?

Analyzing and processing large amounts of text. Claude offers a 200,000-token context window, allowing it to work with lengthy contracts, extensive email threads, or large documents without losing context. It's also exceptionally good at following detailed writing instructions, producing text that closely matches the requested tone and style.

Where does it fall short?

Claude doesn't include native image generation, and its free plan reaches usage limits sooner than ChatGPT's. Voice conversations are not currently available either.

What Is Gemini?

Gemini is Google's AI assistant. Among the three, it's the most deeply integrated into an existing ecosystem, which is both its biggest strength and its biggest limitation.

What is it best at?

If you use Google Workspace, Gemini is built directly into Gmail, Google Docs, Sheets, and Meet. Instead of copying and pasting information between applications, Gemini can work with your files directly. The paid version also supports an impressive context window of up to one million tokens—the largest among the three major AI assistants.

Where does it fall short?

If you don't work within Google's ecosystem, much of its advantage disappears. The free consumer version doesn't include Gmail or Google Drive integration—those features require a Google Workspace subscription.

Which One Should You Use?

  • Choose ChatGPT if you're new to AI or want the most versatile assistant for everyday tasks.

  • Choose Claude if you regularly work with long documents or need high-quality, natural-sounding writing.

  • Choose Gemini if your organization uses Google Workspace and you want AI assistance directly inside Gmail, Docs, Sheets, and Meet.

Do You Have to Choose?

Not at all.

All three can be tried for free, although their free plans differ. ChatGPT's free version includes ads and usage limits, while Claude and Gemini currently offer ad-free free tiers. If you're only going to start with one tool, ChatGPT's free version is more than capable of handling most everyday tasks.

Many experienced AI users switch between all three throughout the day, depending on what they're working on. That's not overkill—it's simply using the right tool for the right job.
